Lush green carpet, spread over 524 sq. kms of area in Stapura hill ranges (Mahadeo hills), Satpura National Park lies in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, Central India. Adjoining to famous hill station Pachmarhi, Satpura Tiger Reserve, on encompassing, Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary makes 1427 sq. km. area, ideal place for some rare wildlife species and medicinal trees. In the year 1981, Satpura National Park was established with an area of 524 sq. km. Recently in May, 2009 it became in news due to arrival of a new generation of tigers in cradle of Satpura hills.
This tiger reserve is still unexplored and virgin offers picturesque natural scenery and some unseen wildlife species with plants having magical medicinal qualities. It is spread over different altitudes ranging from 300 mtr. to 1350 mtr. It is still believed to be untouched and unspoiled wildlife sanctuary. Tiger reserve is offers panoramic view of nature at its best with rocky mountain peaks, gorges, gurgling water falls, sparkling stream, dense deep valleys, rivulets etc.
Satpura hills are known for collection of more than 1200 species of plants in which prominent ones are : Sal, Teak, Tendu, Bel (Stone Apple), Mahua (Indian Butter Tree), Aonla, Bamboo, variety of grasses etc. Principal fauna of Satpura National Park are: Tiger, Leopard, Indian Gaur, Wild Boar, Flying squirrel, Mouse deer, Indian giant squirrel, Black buck, Blue bull, Crocodile, Wild dog (Dhole), Four-horned antelope etc. Wildlife in Satpura National Park encompasses 50 species of mammals, more than 30 species of reptiles and 254 species of avi-fauna. Frequently seen bird species are : Honey buzzards, Crested hawk eagles, Crested serpent eagles, Thrushes, Pittas, Paradise flycatchers, Malabar pied hornbills, Grey hornbills, Peafowl, Shahin falcon etc.
Regular jungle safaris run by the eco tourism development committee take you into the heart of the Satpura forests. Sightings of wild life are common and offer great opportunity for photographers. Separate fee is charged for the still and video cameras by the forest department. The Safari is on chargeable basis and the charges range between Rs.600 to Rs.1600 depending on the length of your trip.
Elephant safaris in the dense Satpura jungle give you a rare experience of a lifetime. The thrill of exploring the forest trekking the tiger in dense areas are thrilling to say the least. The chances of rare wild life sightings are very high as the elephant can walk deep within the forest with almost complete silence, at times so close to the wild life that it will send shivers up your spine.
